TraCS has the ability to interface with barcode scanners to
read PDF417 AAMVA DL/ID standard compliant barcodes (pictured above right)
from documents such as Driver Licenses and Vehicle Registrations.
The data from the barcode is read into TraCS Common Information and can then be
used throughout TraCS by any TraCS Form making individual, vehicle, and carrier
data entry a simple two-click process.
Many states now contain a PDF417 barcode on the front or back of their Driver Licenses. This barcode typically contains
all of the information that is listed on the front of the DL. TraCS can read
these barcodes if they follow the AAMVA standard. However, most states have interpreted the standards differently
introducing variations of the standard. TraCS has taken this into account with a
set of sophisticated deciphering algorithms that are able to interpret most barcodes
attempting to meet the AAMVA DL/ID standards.
Other state documents such as Vehicle Registrations and Commercial Motor Vehicle CAB Cards that contain PDF417 barcodes are also readable
by TraCS if they were encoded using the same AAMVA standards for Driver Licenses.
The standards for non DL/ID barcodes are still being developed. TraCS is not
capable of reading barcodes that significantly deviate from the AAMVA standard or
barcodes that are encrypted.
For the latest information on the AAMVA barcode standards, go to the
AAMVA standards web site.
Another notable advantage of TraCS is that it can interface
with a special type of barcode scanner called an Imager. Imagers in addition
to being able to read barcodes can snap digital pictures of signatures, diagrams
or attachments on TraCS Forms. TraCS can interface with the following Imagers:
Hand Held Products Imagers
TraCS currently interfaces with the HHP 4810LR-153-LTRK Imager, the HHP 4710131-LTRK Imager, the HHP 4600131-LTRK-USB Imager and the HHP 4600R151-LTRK-USB Imager. These imagers use an RS-232 Serial connection to a PC but a USB interface cable is available that also powers the imager through the USB port eliminating the need for extra power cables.
Visit the L-Tron TraCS web site for more information on the latest TraCS compatible Hand Held Products Imagers, available firmware versions, and accessories.
Hand Held Products Imagers can be obtained from several different sources. When purchasing from sources other than L-Tron, ensure that the imager has been loaded with the TraCS Imaging Firmware Update. Vendors should be able to obtain the TraCS specific firmware directly from Hand Held Products or from L-Tron.
